Charles Knights ARCM (Performers)

Charles spent much of his childhood in the Far East. He gained a music scholarship to Malvern College and later studied the violin at the Royal College of Music, London with Maria Lidka, and with Boris Goldstein in Germany.

After graduating, Charles spent six years as a violinist in the Wurzburg Philharmonic in southern Germany. Returning to London, he freelanced with the Philharmonia Orchestra, participating in six European tours and working with such legendary conductors as Giulini, Dutoit, Esa-Pekke Salonen and Yevgeny Svetlanov.

Increasingly interested in teaching, from an initial post as Head of Strings at the 400-year-old Merchant Taylors’ School, he became the Director of Music at St George’s College, Weybridge. Over the next 14 years the music department gained recognition through the success of a series of students winning competitions and gaining scholarships to major music colleges and universities in both the U.K. and U.S.

In addition to directing the London Schools String Ensemble and London Schools Concert Orchestra, he has coached the National Children’s Orchestra GB each summer for nearly 20 years.

In September 2007 Charles was delighted to join the Menuhin Foundation here in Bermuda. Alongside school and private teaching, he also co-directs the Menuhin Youth Orchestra. Charles has enjoyed guest leading both the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra and the Festival Orchestra and in the last few years has worked with artists like Smokey Robinson, Quincy Jones, Kenny Rogers and John Legend.

A passionate traveller and watercolour artist, Charles has already explored much of the U.S., taking kayak trips along the coast of Alaska and even down the Hudson to the Statue of Liberty. He is a qualified rescue diver and has seen manta ray, stingray, humpback whales, black tip sharks and lionfish on his travels. He has held several watercolour exhibitions at the Society of Arts and is determined to develop a way of painting underwater! Perhaps include hobby information for each teacher?
